What can I expect of my appointment with an Osteopath?

Consultations at Momentum Therapies are designed to provide a comprehensive and individualised approach to your musculoskeletal health. Our practitioners start by taking a thorough health history and assessing your presenting complaint and any contributing factors. Through this integrative assessment, we aim to identify the primary cause(s) of your condition and develop a customised treatment plan to effectively address it.

Our initial treatment focuses on reducing pain symptoms and restoring mobility, while follow-up consultations are dedicated to correcting dysfunctional movement patterns, which are often underlying causes of musculoskeletal issues, and building on the changes made in the initial treatment. The continued individualised treatment plan will help you achieve sustained pain-free movement, increased mobility, strength, and performance, and reduced recovery time.

To support your long-term health, we may also incorporate rehabilitation exercises in your treatment plan, to help maintain and improve changes made during treatment. These are long-term measures essential for a sustained pain-free lifestyle and injury prevention.

FAQs about Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a holistic approach to assessing and treating the body based on the osteopathic principles, with a focus on the neuro-musculoskeletal system – the bones, muscles, nerves and other tissues that support the body and control its movements. Osteopaths provide musculoskeletal and nervous system assessments, manual therapy; clinical exercise programs; and movement, postural, positioning advice and ergonomic assessments.

Your osteopath may also offer therapeutic needling techniques like dry needling, ongoing support and educational advice about your lifestyle, stress management, diet or other factors that may influence your pain, injury or movement.

Consultations involve comprehensive and integrative assessments to identify the underlying causes of your musculoskeletal condition, thus creating an efficient and effective treatment specific to you.

The initial treatment entails a thorough health history, assessment of the primary complaint and its contributing factors, followed by treatment to reduce or manage pain symptoms and regain mobility.

Follow-up consultations continue the individualised treatment plan of symptom relief and improving dysfunctional movement patterns, established in the initial consultation. These patterns contribute to the underlying causes of the primary complaint.

If your condition requires assessment and treatment of painful or tender areas, your osteopath will aim to make you as comfortable as possible. Unfortunately, some conditions can cause short-term discomfort during assessment and treatment.

Symptom exacerbation, such as transient soreness, may occur for 24-48 hours after treatment and is considered a normal, temporary outcome of the treatment process. If the discomfort persists or increases significantly, contact the clinic to discuss your concerns.

No, you do not need a referral from your GP to see an osteopath. You are able to make an appointment as a private patient.

This depends on your condition. Long-term (chronic) conditions may require a longer treatment plan than short-term (acute) conditions. Your osteopath will discuss timeframes with you based on your individual needs. In general, you may feel some change within 2-3 treatments.

Treatment plans may include rehabilitation exercises that help to maintain improved movement. These preventative measures allow for sustained pain-free posture, movement patterns, increased mobility, increased muscle power and performance and decreased recovery time.

Depending on your condition, the assessment, treatment, and discussion regarding your condition, your osteopath may require some additional information. Your osteopath may refer you to another health practitioner or your GP for further investigation. This may include scans such as X-rays, MRI, ultrasound, or blood tests.

FAQs about Consultations

If you have any diagnostic reports (x-ray, CT scan, ultrasound and/or MRI) or any test results for your injury or condition, please bring them along to your initial appointment. Alternatively, you can email them to the clinic prior to your initial appointment.

If required, please also bring your health insurance card, GP referral, Medicare card, DVA card and referral, or WorkCover QLD medical certificate.

It’s best to wear something loose and comfortable to your appointment, e.g. loose t-shirt, pants or shorts, activewear, or bring loose clothing with you to change into at the appointment. Depending on which region is being assessed and treated, you may be asked to partially remove some clothing. If you would prefer to stay in your clothing, that is perfectly fine too. Please wear underwear and deodorant to your appointment.

An initial health history form provides your osteopath with your individual medical history, which helps them to understand the primary cause of your condition, allowing them to develop a personalised plan to help you reduce, resolve or manage your condition. All new patients will be emailed an initial health history form to complete prior to their first appointment. Filling out the form properly will save time in your appointment by covering a lot of the questions we need to ask.

Yes, you are more than welcome to bring someone with you to your appointment.

FAQs about Rebates

Yes, Osteopathy can be partially covered by Medicare.

Medicare rebates with a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan (formerly known as an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan) can provide you with a partial rebate for your osteopathic appointments. These plans are GP referrals only and require a valid referral to process the Medicare rebate. The referral form will look like this: Referral form for chronic disease allied health services under Medicare

Please bring to your CDM appointment:

  1. Your valid referral from your GP
  2. Your Medicare card.
  3. Your physical EFTPOS Debit card.

The consultation fee is paid in full first, and then the partial Medicare rebate of between $56-58 per osteopathic appointment will be processed afterwards at the time of consultation. The rebate will be entered into your Medicare-allocated bank account within 3-5 business days. Due to Medicare providing a partial rebate, there will be an out-of-pocket expense.

Types of CDM appointments at Momentum Therapies:

CDM Standard Initial Consultation and Treatment: $129.00 (45 minutes)

CDM Follow-up Consultation and Treatment: $99.00 (30 minutes)

Your GP can refer you for up to 5 appointments with any Allied Health Practitioner.

These appointments may be all allocated to osteopathy, or they may be divided between different allied health professions, such as 3 appointments for osteopathy, and 2 appointments for podiatry.

Appointment allocation is reviewed by your GP each year, and you will need a new referral for each calendar year.

Generally, you must have a chronic or terminal health condition to qualify for the CDM plan and Medicare rebate.

A chronic medical condition is one that has been (or is likely to be) present for six months or longer, for example, asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions and stroke. There is no list of eligible conditions. However, these items are designed for patients who require a structured approach to their care and to enable GPs to plan and coordinate the care of patients with complex conditions requiring ongoing care from a multidisciplinary team.

Ultimately, It is best to discuss this option with your GP.
